Jalan Surabaya is well known for the antiques market located there. Jalan Surabaya itself is located at Menteng area, at the Central of Jakarta. You can see kiosks/shops that sell antiques like wayang, porcelain, wooden sculptures, mask, eating stuffs made of silver and brass, antique lamp, metal souvenirs, old fashion ornaments, old telephon, old carema, old woven cloth, phonograph record, and some others.  One of the kiosks there is selling antiques of ship stuffs like ship rudder, compass, telescope, and old diving stuffs. At the antique markets at Jalan Surabaya, there’re some kiosk that specialized on selling bags and suitcases. There’re also kiosks that sell old books.


Antique market at Jalan Surabaya has been exist since 1974, and was officially opened by Ali Sadikin, the Governor of Jakarta at that time. Before the antique market was build at Jalan Surabaya, antique traders sold their goods by walking around Kota Tua Jakarta while carrying the goods on their shoulders to find people who wanted to buy from them. The current traders at Jalan Surabaya are mostly the second generations of the former traders who traded by walking around.


For those who loves antique you would find that this antique market at Jalan Surabaya is very interesting. Antique market at Jalan Surabaya has been popular in Indonesia as well as abroad. Some of famous people that said to have visit the antique market were Mick Jagger, Sharon Stone, and Bill Clinton, the ex president of The States.

  • You need to bargain when you want to do transaction at the antique market at Jalan Surabaya. Do not forget to do price comparison between one shop to another.
  • Some people said that some of the antiques sold at Jalan Surabaya are not original (fake). It’s better to bring someone who understands about antiques when you visit Jalan Surabaya.
  • For those who don’t really understand Jakarta, it will be very complicated to reach Jalan Surabaya by public transportation. It’s better to ride taxi or bajaj.

This is one of so many road in Bandung which can accommodate local tourist and international tourist. This street name was got from two aspect, hidrology and biology. Cihampelas comes from combination  of two words. That is “ci” and “hampelas”.
1) Ci = water or river (sundanesse)
2) Hampelas = one kind of tree that the leaf was rough.
Thus, Cihampelas means a place beside a river that have so many hampelas tree between the river and place.

Cihampelas Region has becomes the great place in Bandung, because cihampelas now is a tourist town and potential for business development for people of the city. In this region, there is many selection of factory outlet and a busy shopping center. There are too have a  mall named cihampelas walk (ciwalk), ciwalk was a big mall in center of cihampelas street.
There are also have educational facilities such as SMU 2 Bandung, SMU 2 Pasundan and SMUN 8 Bandung and of course health facilities such as advent hospital.

Factory outlet in cihampelas sell so many things such as clothes, T-shirt, jeans, bag, pants and also a merchandise from this town. But in this street the famous one is jeans. In cihampelas street doesn’t have a big restaurant, maybe just a little seller who sell like a bakso or ice cream durian etc. you can find a big restaurant for eat in Ciwalk, ciwalk also have much better facilities.

4. Low Price, high Quality


















Cihampelas product was have a great quality, because there are have a famous outlet that give a high quality product. But in a big outlet the price is not really cheap, maybe because of the outlet which is big so they give a expensive price. But you can also find a cheap product in front of the outlet, there are a seller that doesn’t have a place for selling but just with a little table for put their products.

Cihampelas was a safety place also. Because in this place every outlet have a security guard, a criminality in this town was so little. So you can enjoy doing anything in this place. And in ciwalk you can get more safety because in this mall a secure was tight. So the criminality more minimum.

KLEWER MARKET - The Legendary Batik Market


As people said, during the colonial era Klewer Market was a train station. People also used this place to sell merchandises to the train passengers; therefore, it was called Slompretan Market. The word slompretan comes from slompret (means trumpet) because the departing train’s sound is almost similar to the sound of the trumpet blown. Slompretan Market was also thronged by merchants who sell their textile products such as batik. These merchants sold their batik by carrying them on their back/shoulders and the batik looked dangling (klewer). Later, this market is well-known as Klewer Market - dangling market.
In 1970s, this market was renovated into a huge two stories permanent building. This market accommodates two thousand kiosks and the buyers would feel more comfortable to shop because of the wide stairs giving more open space.

The Cheap Textile and Batik Wholesale Center

Walking along its wide aisles, from one block to another block, various kinds of batik clothes as if persuade you to buy them. From kebaya (Javanese traditional woman cloth), fabrics, formal clothes, to batik shirts, house dress, beautiful blouses and kids clothes. Not only Solo Batik, this market also provides batik collections from Banyumas, Pekalongan, Madura, Yogyakarta, etc. You will easily find both the stamped batik for thousands rupiah and written batik which is way cheaper than the one in boutiques/stores. Bargaining skill is the most important thing to get the best price. Most of the kiosks also sell wholesale for cheaper price instead of buying in retail.
Go to the second floor, you will find various kinds of textiles, from school uniform, shirt, jacket, ties, cotton fabric, and silk. The unique thing is, there are tailors in this market, ready to sew the fabric you bought into your dream cloth in less than a day.
Tired of shopping and walking around this textile market, you can go to either the front or the side of the market. Various kinds of food stalls are not only ready to be a rest place, but also the place to enjoy various kinds of traditional food. Nasi Pecel, Nasi Liwet, Tengkleng, Dawet, Gempol and many kinds of food and drinks are ready to relieve your thirst and hunger.

To maintain and taking care the beauty of your batik, there are some tips for you:
1.     Avoid washing your batik by washing-machine and detergent. Wash it with your hand, use either shampoo dissolved with water or body-soap.
2.     Dry it under the shade without pressing it before. Avoid drying under the direct sun light. Let it dry naturally.
3.     Foil your batik with another cloth before ironing. Avoid the direct heat from the iron.
4.     Avoid spraying cloth fragrance, softener, or perfume directly on the batik.
